In the Hot Seat: Vicki King

Vicki KingToday we have Vicki King in the hot seat. Vicki might seem new on the block at eQ but she has been around for quite some time and has an absolute passion to support children and families.

Lotus: “So you had a light bulb moment huh Vicki, Oprah would be proud. Tell us about it.”

Vicki: “Well, about 6 years ago I hit exhaustion from an intense teaching position and decided to take some time out to reassess my future, so I took a trip to Tasmania. Whilst on the plane I read the book “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson. That’s when I had my light bulb moment. I realized I wanted to create and facilitate a youth empowerment program. Obviously someone heard my thoughts as only days later I received a call from eQ inviting me to a weekend workshop called Personal Success Intensive. I jumped at the opportunity and attending it twice and then went on to do Life Design.”

Lotus: “That was a while ago, right?”

Vicki: “Yes that all happened in 2007, 2008. I even moved to Sydney from interstate and worked at eQ on the phones for a short time whilst I planned my next move. I didn’t have the confidence back then to create a program. I kept thinking there was more I needed to know and more I needed to experience. I began working for an online training organization training adults to become qualified teacher aids in schools. I realized I needed to study the Coaching for Life and Business Program at eQ which I completed in early 2012. It was then when I started my own coaching business supporting families with behavioural issues and family stress.”

Lotus: “You’re being a bit humble there Vicki. I have heard from Pete about some other powerful work you have done in the past with children and families too. Can you tell us about that? I’ve heard you’ve been working with children since you were a teenager yourself.”

Vicki: “When I was 18 I began working with children in the child care industry. I was drawn to children as I wanted to make a difference in their lives. I’ve loved seeing them grow and develop. I have also travelled overseas and worked as a nanny. After living overseas making money in all sorts of funny ways like landscape gardening (loved jack hammering up old driveways and patios), I returned to Australia and went back to school to study the Bachelor of Education and became a primary school teacher. A few years into my teaching career, I was spotted by an Advisory Visiting Teacher who encouraged me to join the Behaviour Management Team.”

Lotus: “Why did they pick you?”

Vicki: “She witnessed how I worked with children and the various methods I used to manage challenging behaviours. I demonstrated how to work with children from a loving and supportive approach. Things that came naturally to me, others struggled to implement in the classroom. So, I joined the team and experienced mentoring other educators, parents and school administrators regarding behavior management. I was able to reduce suspension and expulsion in one particular school by 70% within 12 months. It was from this result I was invited to start a behaviour unit for the top 3% of behaviourally challenged children. I requested that the facility offer a mentoring/in home support service for the family. They agreed, and I am happy to say that I believe the facility is still going. As much I loved this work, it took its toll on me. Eventually I went back to regular classroom teaching and this is when I decided to go on my holiday to Tasmania for a good break.”

Lotus: “What’s your vision now?”

Vicki: “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard others say, they wish there was a Life Design or Personal Success Intensive for teenagers. Imagine the choices we would have made if we had the knowledge at such an impressive age. I ideally, would love to make a mark on reducing youth on the streets and teen suicide. I want to give teens an opportunity to know that they have choices that can empower them through fun interactive learning. Like a Life Design for teenagers.”

Lotus: “That is a very noble cause. Wow. And now eQ Youth is being born. How is that for dreams coming true?”

Vicki: “Yeah! The time was right. I had a dream that I truly believe in and I took steps to create the opportunity for the development for eQ Youth. Now I am surrendering to this adventure and I am so excited about celebrating its success. I can’t wait to be part of all the amazing experiences teenagers will be exposed to during and after this program. I am so happy to be at this place in my life. I am ready to launch this with Pete together with the support of the eQ community.”

Lotus: “I am so excited that my eldest son will be in one of your first courses. Can you share with us a Vicki pearl of wisdom?”

Vicki: “Sure can! It’s not what you do; it’s how you do it. Take that extra step to make something special. Depending on how you do things will reflect in your results. Always be sincere in your words and actions and come from a place of love.”
