How To Make 2017 Your Best Year Yet!

2017Most people rarely think about how their small decisions affect their life and their future.  The seemingly insignificant positive or negative choices you make every day compound over time. Small choices that seem easy and natural for you to make each day can impact your life greatly later on.  You may not notice a difference today or tomorrow; however, you will absolutely notice how the decisions you make now will make a difference in your life by the end of 2017, if not earlier!

Take eating healthy as an example. If you have the goal to eat healthier, you’re faced with meal choices each day that can determine your path — whether you accomplish your goal or not.  Should you get greasy, calorie-loaded pizza for lunch or bring a homemade chicken salad with you to work and eat that instead?  Should you steal some chocolates from your coworker’s desk drawer or grab the apple you packed for a snack?  You may think, “Oh, it’s just a little nibble – it won’t hurt me,” but those little nibbles add up.  Imagine how amazing you would look and feel in a year’s time if you swapped your meals from processed food-like substances to fresh, healthy food!

So, how can you reach your goals in 2017?  Your philosophy – the way you think and live your life – is the starting point.  Notice what thoughts you have throughout the day.  Do you have more negative or positive thoughts?  Do you complain more or compliment more?  Start with changing your mindset.  The way you think is what leads you to the decisions you make in your life.  For example, if you’re confident in yourself, you’ll work harder and focus more on projects and assignments; if you’re lacking in self-confidence, you slack off more and withdraw from daily activities since those negative thoughts about yourself drain your energy.  The point is that, if you want a positive lifestyle, lead your mind towards positive thoughts.

Now is the perfect time to reflect on the year gone by and set your goals for 2017.  Visualise yourself achieving each of your goals and get really clear on what you want to achieve this year.  Write each of your goals down, describing them in as much detail as possible.  Then break each goal down into smaller action points.  Next to each action, write the date that you intend to complete each action by.  For example, if your goal is to develop healthier eating habits, here are a few ideas for action steps you can do to help you achieve your goal:

  • Keep a food journal, and record the food you eat throughout the day.  See what your current diet is like and adjust it to help you reach your goal of eating healthier.
  • Throw out all the unhealthy foods in your home.
  • Wake up earlier to prepare a fresh, healthy lunch for work.

Finally, take 10 minutes each day to picture yourself achieving your goals. Imagine what it will feel like when you reach them.  Who do you have to be and what do you have to do to have the life you desire?  Most importantly, think about why your goals are so important to you.
